In September he left for St. Petersburg, where Chagall entered alternative military service at the Central Bureau for War Economy. 1916-1917 Chagall joined the Jewish Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts. On May 18 1916 the Chagalls' daughter Ida, was born.

The Rosenfelds were merchants who paid tribute to the Viciebsk way of life: the jewellery dealers lived in the centre, they kept a cow in the barn, which they always took to the country with them. Viciebsk used to be a fairly large city with several theatres, a city symphony orchestra, and an art school, which was founded by Yehuda Pen.
